Ingredients
Pasta and Coloring
- 1 (16 oz) box farfalle pasta (bat-shaped)
- Black food coloring
- Water (for boiling and soaking)
Pasta Salad
- 1 orange bell pepper, cut into star shapes
- 1 yellow bell pepper, cut into moon shapes
- 1 cup marinated mozzarella balls
- 1 cup shelled edamame, cooked and cooled
- ½ cup Italian dressing
- ¼ cup red onion, chopped
- ¼ cup black olives (for ‘creepy eyes’)
Optional
- Olive oil (to drizzle)
- Parmesan cheese or cheese of your choice (to garnish)
Instructions
- Cook Pasta: Prepare the farfalle pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Once cooked, drain and rinse under cold water until completely cooled to stop the cooking process.
- Color the Pasta: In a large pan or bowl, place the cooked pasta and add just enough water to cover it. Stir in black food coloring thoroughly, then soak the pasta for 5 minutes, stirring frequently to ensure even coloring.
- Rinse Colored Pasta: Drain the colored pasta using a strainer and rinse under cold water until the water runs clear, removing excess dye and preventing stickiness.
- Mix Salad Ingredients: Transfer the black-colored pasta to a large bowl. Add the star-shaped orange bell pepper, moon-shaped yellow bell pepper, marinated mozzarella balls, cooked shelled edamame, chopped red onion, and black olives. Pour the Italian dressing over the salad.
- Toss and Serve: Gently toss all ingredients together until evenly coated with dressing. Optionally, drizzle a little olive oil and sprinkle with parmesan cheese or your cheese of choice for added flavor before serving.
Notes
- Ensure pasta is cooled completely before coloring to maintain texture and prevent color bleeding.
- Use gloves when handling black food coloring to avoid staining your hands.
- Customization: Swap mozzarella with a vegan cheese to make it suitable for vegan diets.
- Add extra veggies or nuts for more texture and nutrition.
- Prepare the pasta a day ahead, color it fresh before serving to keep colors vibrant.
