Ingredients
Fruit and Spices
- 1 apple
- 1 pear
- 1/2 orange
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
Liquids
- 1 750 ml bottle dry red wine, such as Rioja
- 1 750 ml bottle sparkling cider or apple cider
Optional Garnishes
- Cinnamon stick
- Rosemary sprig
- Remaining orange slices
Instructions
- Prepare the fruit: Thinly slice the apple, pear, and orange. Place them into a medium bowl and stir in the sugar and cinnamon, ensuring the fruit is evenly coated for maximum flavor infusion.
- Macerate: Transfer the sugared and spiced fruit to a large pitcher and allow it to stand for 1 hour. This resting time lets the flavors meld and the fruit to release its juices.
- Add the red wine: After the hour, pour in the dry red wine over the fruit mixture. The sangria can be used immediately, or for deeper flavor, chill it in the refrigerator for up to 3 hours.
- Serve: Fill glasses with ice, then fill halfway with sparkling apple cider and halfway with the red wine mixture. Garnish with a cinnamon stick, rosemary sprig, or orange slices as desired. Enjoy the sweetened fruit at the bottom of the glass once you’ve finished your drink.
Notes
- This sangria benefits from resting time to meld flavors but can be served immediately if needed.
- Using a dry red wine such as Rioja balances the sweetness of the cider and fruit.
- For a non-alcoholic version, substitute the red wine with additional sparkling apple cider or grape juice.
- Adjust sugar quantity according to your sweetness preference.
