Description

These Easy Rice Paper Dumplings are crispy, flavorful, and gluten-free, perfect for an appetizer, snack, or main dish. Filled with a savory ground beef mixture seasoned with garlic, ginger, and soy sauce, and paired with a spicy-sweet dipping sauce, these dumplings offer a satisfying and delightful meal experience. The dumplings are pan-fried to golden perfection with a crispy exterior and tender filling.

Ingredients

Filling

  • 1/2 lb ground beef
  • 2 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 tsp minced cilantro
  • 1 tbsp minced green onion
  • 1 tsp minced ginger
  • 2 tbsp light soy sauce
  • 1/2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1/4 tsp ground pepper
  • 1/3 cup minced carrots

Dipping Sauce

  • 1 tbsp chili oil
  • 2 tbsp light soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1/2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1/2 tbsp sugar
  • minced green onions (optional)
  • sesame seeds (optional)

Others

  • rice paper wrappers (enough for 2 servings, about 8-10 sheets)
  • neutral cooking oil (for sautéing and pan frying, such as vegetable or canola oil)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, garlic, cilantro, green onion, ginger, light soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, and pepper. Mix well and let it marinate for at least 15 minutes for flavors to meld.
  2. Cook the Carrots and Filling: Heat 2 tablespoons of neutral oil in a pan over medium heat. Sauté the minced carrots for 2 minutes until slightly softened. Add the marinated beef mixture to the pan, stirring occasionally, and cook until the beef is fully cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and allow the filling to cool.
  3. Soak Rice Paper: Briefly soak one rice paper sheet in warm water for 5-10 seconds until pliable but not too soft. Lay it flat on a clean surface.
  4. Fold the Dumplings: Place approximately 2.5 tablespoons of the cooled filling into the center of the rice paper. Fold the top edge toward the center, then fold the right and left sides inward, followed by folding the bottom over to create a neat packet. Repeat the process, wrapping each dumpling again in another rice paper sheet for extra layering and durability.
  5. Pan Fry the Dumplings: Heat neutral oil in a pan over medium heat, enough to coat the bottom. Once hot, carefully place the dumplings folded side down in the pan. Optionally, gently press them with a spatula to ensure even contact and prevent tipping. Fry until golden brown and crispy on each side, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  6. Prepare the Dipping Sauce: In a small bowl, mix chili oil, light soy sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, and sugar until well combined. Add minced green onions and sesame seeds if desired.
  7. Serve: Serve the crispy rice paper dumplings warm alongside the dipping sauce. Enjoy this delicious and crunchy treat!

Notes

  • You can adjust the amount of chili oil in the dipping sauce according to your heat preference.
  • Using two layers of rice paper wrapping prevents the dumplings from falling apart during cooking and adds extra crispiness.
  • Make sure not to soak the rice paper too long to avoid tears and sogginess.
  • Use neutral oil like vegetable or canola oil for frying to avoid overpowering the delicate flavors.
