Description

Tarte Tatin is a classic French baked dessert featuring caramelized apples cooked in butter and sugar, topped with a flaky pie crust, and baked to golden perfection. This simple yet elegant treat uses basic ingredients like Granny Smith apples, butter, sugar, and pastry dough to create a decadent and irresistible dessert perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

For the Caramelized Apples

  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • ¾ cup white sugar
  • 3 large Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and quartered

For the Pastry

  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour (for rolling dough)
  • 1 (9-inch) unbaked pie crust

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) to prepare for baking the tarte tatin.
  2. Prepare Skillet: Coat a heavy-bottomed 10-inch oven-proof skillet with butter, then evenly sprinkle the sugar over the butter layer.
  3. Arrange Apples: Place the peeled and quartered apples rounded side down on the butter and sugar in a circular pattern to ensure even caramelization.
  4. Caramelize Apples: Place the skillet over medium-high heat and cook until the butter melts and sugar dissolves, starting to caramelize. Continue cooking for 10 to 12 minutes until the apples soften and the caramel browns.
  5. Roll Pie Dough: Lightly flour a work surface and roll out the pie dough into an 11-inch circle. Pinch the edges to create a decorative ruffle around the crust.
  6. Cover Apples with Dough: Place the rolled dough over the caramelized apples, tucking in the edges around the apples inside the skillet.
  7. Bake: Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven and bake for about 20 minutes or until the crust is golden brown.
  8. Cool and Invert: Remove from the oven and allow the tarte to cool for 5 minutes. Place a plate over the skillet and carefully invert it to release the tarte tatin onto the plate.
  9. Serve: If any apples remain stuck in the pan, scrape them back onto the crust before serving.

Notes

  • Granny Smith apples are preferred for their tart flavor and firmness, but firm sweet-tart varieties like Honeycrisp also work well.
  • You can substitute puff pastry for the pie crust if you prefer a flakier texture.
  • Ensure the skillet used is oven-proof to safely transfer it to the oven.
  • Serve warm or at room temperature, optionally with vanilla ice cream or crème fraîche for extra indulgence.
