Description

These Cheesy French Pinwheels are a delightful appetizer featuring flaky puff pastry rolled with tangy whole grain mustard, fresh rosemary, thinly sliced salami, and shredded Jack cheese. Perfectly golden and crispy on the outside with a melty, savory filling inside, they make an impressive yet easy-to-make snack or party treat.

Ingredients

Puff Pastry and Spreads

  • 2 sheets puff pastry
  • 1/2 cup country Dijon (whole grain mustard)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, finely chopped

Fillings

  • 1/2 pound salami, very thinly sliced
  • 3 cups Jack cheese, shredded

Egg Wash

  • 2 large eggs, beaten to blend

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Pans: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line two large baking sheets with Silpats or parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
  2. Defrost Puff Pastry: Remove the puff pastry sheets from the freezer and defrost according to package instructions, usually about 30-40 minutes, until pliable but still cold.
  3. Roll Out Pastry Sheets: Gently unfold one puff pastry sheet onto a lightly floured surface. Using a lightly floured rolling pin, smooth out any creases to create an even surface for filling.
  4. Add Fillings and Roll: Spread half of the mustard evenly over the pastry, leaving a 1/2-inch border all around. Sprinkle half the rosemary evenly over the mustard layer. Arrange half the salami slices over this, slightly overlapping as needed. Sprinkle half the shredded Jack cheese on top. Brush the plain border of the pastry with beaten egg, then carefully roll the pastry sheet jelly-roll style, pressing to seal the seam. Repeat this process with the second sheet and remaining ingredients.
  5. Cut and Arrange Pinwheels: Slice each rolled log into 1/2-inch-thick rounds. Arrange these rounds on the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 1 inch apart. Brush the tops with the remaining beaten egg for a golden finish.
  6. Bake: Bake the pinwheels in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes or until they are puffed up and nicely golden brown.
  7. Serve: Remove from oven and serve warm for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • You can substitute salami with other deli meats like prosciutto or ham for a different flavor.
  • Ensure the puff pastry is well chilled before rolling to prevent sticking and tears.
  • Use a sharp knife or dental floss to slice the pinwheels cleanly.
  • These pinwheels are best enjoyed fresh but can be reheated briefly in the oven.
  • Customize the cheese by swapping Jack cheese with mozzarella or cheddar.
