Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 2 cups white sugar
- 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
- 1 cup strong brewed coffee
- 1 cup buttermilk
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Pans: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or one 9×13-inch baking dish, ensuring an even coating to prevent sticking.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the sugar, all-purpose flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Stir well to evenly distribute all the dry ingredients.
- Add Wet Ingredients: Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the strong brewed coffee, buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Using an electric mixer, beat the mixture at medium speed for 2 minutes until everything is well combined. Note that the batter will be thin.
- Pour Batter into Pans: Evenly divide the batter between the prepared cake pans or pour all into the 9×13-inch dish, spreading it out evenly.
- Bake the Cake: Place the pans in the preheated oven and bake for 30 to 40 minutes. The cake is done when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean without any batter sticking to it.
- Cool the Cakes: Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes. Then, carefully remove them from the pans and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Fill and Frost: Once fully cooled, fill and frost the cake layers as desired with your favorite frosting to complete your Black Magic Cake.
Notes
- Ensure your brewed coffee is strong to intensify the chocolate flavor without adding bitterness.
- The batter will be thin; this is normal and results in a moist cake.
- Greasing and flouring the pans well helps to prevent the cake from sticking during baking.
- Let the cakes cool completely before frosting to prevent melting.
- This recipe yields two 9-inch cake rounds or one 9×13-inch cake, serving about 24 slices.
