Ingredients
Apple Butter Ingredients
- 8 to 10 large apples
- 1/2 cup apple cider (or apple juice)
- 1/4 cup maple syrup
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground clove
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon allspice
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice (added to water to keep apples from turning brown)
Instructions
- Wash Apples: Thoroughly wash the apples to remove any dirt or residues before proceeding.
- Peel, Core, and Cut Apples: Using a paring knife or a KitchenAid spiral attachment for efficiency, peel, core, and slice the apples.
- Soak to Prevent Browning: Place the prepared apples in a large bowl filled with water mixed with lemon juice to keep them from browning. This step is optional but recommended for maintaining freshness.
- Drain and Transfer to Instant Pot: Drain the apple slices well and put them into the inner pot of your Instant Pot.
- Add Sweeteners and Spices: Pour in the apple cider, maple syrup, brown sugar, and sprinkle the ground clove, nutmeg, allspice, cinnamon. Stir well to combine all ingredients evenly with the apples.
- Seal the Instant Pot: Place the lid on the Instant Pot and lock it securely. Set the steam release valve to the sealing position.
- Pressure Cook: Set the Instant Pot to cook on low pressure for 25 minutes to allow the apples and spices to meld and soften into a buttery consistency.
- Release Pressure: After cooking, let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes, then carefully turn the valve to vent any remaining pressure.
- Thicken the Apple Butter: If the apple butter is thinner than desired, remove the lid and switch the Instant Pot to ‘Sauté’. Let it boil gently for 5 to 10 minutes to reduce excess liquid and thicken.
- Cool Down: Remove the inner pot and place it on a heat-safe surface to cool to room temperature.
- Store: Once cooled, transfer the apple butter to glass jars or suitable storage containers for refrigeration.
- Refrigerate & Use: Keep refrigerated for up to 3 weeks. Enjoy as a spread, topping, or ingredient in various recipes.
