Description

Tennessee Onions are tender, sweet onion rings baked in butter and seasoned with garlic, creating a cozy, flavorful side dish that’s even better than traditional onion rings.

Ingredients

34 Vidalia sweet onions

4 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small knobs

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick spray.
  2. Peel onions and slice crosswise into ¼-inch-thick rounds. Separate into individual rings.
  3. Arrange onion rings in a single layer in the prepared dish.
  4. Dot with butter pieces and sprinkle evenly with salt and garlic powder.
  5. Cover tightly with foil and bake for 35–40 minutes until onions are soft and steaming.
  6. Remove foil and bake for an additional 10–15 minutes, until edges are lightly browned and fragrant.
  7. Let rest a few minutes before serving hot from the dish.

Notes

For an herbed twist, add ½ teaspoon dried thyme or oregano with the garlic powder.

For a cheesy upgrade, sprinkle ½ cup shredded cheddar over the onions before the final bake.

Add ¼ teaspoon cayenne for a spicy kick.

Layer sliced bell peppers or zucchini under the onions for extra vegetables.

Dot with liquid smoke before baking for a smoky, barbecue-inspired flavor.
