Description
Tennessee Onions are tender, sweet onion rings baked in butter and seasoned with garlic, creating a cozy, flavorful side dish that’s even better than traditional onion rings.
Ingredients
3–4 Vidalia sweet onions
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small knobs
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick spray.
- Peel onions and slice crosswise into ¼-inch-thick rounds. Separate into individual rings.
- Arrange onion rings in a single layer in the prepared dish.
- Dot with butter pieces and sprinkle evenly with salt and garlic powder.
- Cover tightly with foil and bake for 35–40 minutes until onions are soft and steaming.
- Remove foil and bake for an additional 10–15 minutes, until edges are lightly browned and fragrant.
- Let rest a few minutes before serving hot from the dish.
Notes
For an herbed twist, add ½ teaspoon dried thyme or oregano with the garlic powder.
For a cheesy upgrade, sprinkle ½ cup shredded cheddar over the onions before the final bake.
Add ¼ teaspoon cayenne for a spicy kick.
Layer sliced bell peppers or zucchini under the onions for extra vegetables.
Dot with liquid smoke before baking for a smoky, barbecue-inspired flavor.
