Description
Christmas Ooey Gooey Butter Cookies are soft, chewy, and buttery cookies made with cream cheese and cake mix. Rolled in powdered sugar and baked to perfection, they’re festive, gooey inside, and perfect for holiday cookie trays or gift boxes.
Ingredients
8 oz cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
1 large egg
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 box (15.25 oz) yellow or white cake mix
1 cup powdered sugar (for rolling)
Optional: red and green food coloring or sprinkles
Instructions
- In a large bowl, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth and creamy.
- Add egg and vanilla; mix until fully combined.
- Stir in cake mix until a thick dough forms.
- If desired, divide dough and tint with red or green food coloring for festive cookies.
- Chill dough in refrigerator for 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Roll dough into 1-inch balls, coat in powdered sugar, and place on prepared baking sheets.
- Bake 10–12 minutes, until edges are set but centers remain soft.
- Cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to wire rack.
Notes
Chilling the dough helps prevent spreading and makes rolling easier.
Roll dough balls generously in powdered sugar for a snowy look.
Use red velvet or chocolate cake mix for variety.
Add peppermint extract instead of vanilla for a holiday twist.
Store in an airtight container or freeze for up to 2 months.
